RBI signs currency swap agreement with Bank of Japan
The Reserve Bank of India signed a bilateral swap arrangement (BSA) with the Bank of Japan to swap their local currencies for an amount of $15 billion for a three year period on 4 December 2012.The BSA will effect from 5 December 2012.The arrangement aims at addressing short-term liquidity difficulties and supplementing the existing international financial arrangements, as one of the efforts in strengthening mutual cooperation between Japan and India.
International Olympic Committee suspends India
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended India’s national Olympic committee on 4 December 2012 because of government interference in its election process.The IOC had repeatedly told the Indian body to adhere to its own constitution and the Olympic Charter and not follow the government’s sports code for this week’s elections. The IOC will not recognize the results if the elections are held under government rules.Suspension means the Indian body will stop receiving IOC funding and its officials will be banned from attending Olympic meetings and events. Usha Thorat Committee for NBFCs
India’s majority of Non-Banking Finance companies (NBFCs) may be freed from the regulatory clutches provided Reserve Bank of India (RBI) implements one of the recommendations made by Usha Thorat Committee. which suggested maintaining a minimum asset size of more than Rs 50 crore along with a net owned fund of Rs 2 crore; for registering any new NBFC.The committee had submitted its recommendations to RBI. The working group was constituted to review the existing regulatory and supervisory framework of NBFCs with special focus on the risks in the sector.Currently, those recommendations are under RBI’s consideration.
Chandrashekhar Committee to Frame Rules for Foreign Investors

the new Visa Agreement between India and Pakistan on 14th December,
2012 at New Delhi. However, the Visa-on-Arrival will come into
effect from 15th January, 2013 and the Group Tourist Visa from 15th
March, 2013. Main features of the India-Pakistan new Visa Agreement
are as follows : Visitor Visa
• Places of visit allowable increased from three to five
places
• In exceptional cases visitor visa for one year could be issued in
the past. Now provision made for issue of visa upto two years in
following cases:
a.Persons above 65 years of age
b.National of one country married to national of the other
country.
c. Children below 12 years accompanying parents in (b) above
Visa on Arrival can be granted at Attari/Wagah check-post to
persons more than 65 years of age for 45 days with single entry
(effective from 15th January, 2013).

Exemption from Police Reporting for Business visa granted to

World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12)

Government approved 3% interest subsidy for farmers
The UPA Government has approved the 3% loan subvention for short term crop loans and additional three percent subsidy interest on timely repayment on such loans.This interest subvention to farmers will be available through Nabard, regional rural banks, cooperative banks and public sector banks.Accordingly, farmers availing loans up to Rs 3 lakh will have to pay interest at 7 per cent per annum during this financial year.

Govt launches Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings

The Finance Minister P Chidambaram on 21st September 2012 cut withholding tax on overseas borrowings to 5 percent from 20 percent and approved the Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS).While the RGESS is aimed at encouraging first time retail investors to invest in stock markets through tax concessions, the cut in withholding tax to 5 percent seeks to lower the cost of foreign borrowings by the Indian companies.The RGESS will give tax benefits to new investors who invest up to Rs 50,000 and whose annual income is below Rs 10 lakh.
